Membership development PDF Print E-mail

For clubs, associations, professional bodies and many charities, members are lifeblood. Members provide a stable revenue stream, manage the organisation and get things done.

Such voluntary involvement was once the backbone of Australian society, but today there is a long-term lifestyle trend away from membership and ongoing involvement in favour of event-based and short term participation.

You can do two things:

  • Maximise traditional membership
    • Increase renewals
    • Encourage members to sign up their family and friends
    • Encourage word of mouth promotion
    • Promote to the wider community
    • Increase the benefits of membership
  • Create options for short term or events based membership
    • Create a reduced-fee casual membership category that includes notification of all events
    • Partner with other organisations to create a multi-organisation casual-use membership
    • Develop events targeted to the interests of casual participants (eg, one or two-day tournaments rather than season-long competitions, activities for smaller teams/individuals)

Reducing member age

A result of the trend away from membership is that for many clubs the average age of members is steadily climbing. One organisation we worked with, it was over 60. This has serious implications for management and the ongoing sustainability of the organisation.

The good news is, there are things you can do to introduce a younger audience.

Glide is experienced and successful at helping organisations attract new members. And the best part is, the fees they pay can offset the cost of the exercise – and then their ongoing fees add to future revenue. Call us to if you want to turn your organisation around.
