Apps can be a promotion in their own right, even if what they actually do is not especially great.

Apps say something about the company: that it is at the leading edge, an innovator, creating the future: that it is doing things for its customers, to help them live their lives.

A company with an app will be more interesting to customers than a similar company without one.

For example iPhone apps are way cool right now. If you want Gen Y or any of the 100 million iPhone users to notice you, an app will do it many times better and many times cheaper than a newspaper campaign.

The fact is, whether it’s Apple, Android, Blackberry or Palm, smart phone apps have more cut-through for many market segments that any media advertising.
